Sinister 9 frame analysis Molly Curtis

Oval: 9Oval: 8Oval: 71. In this scene we can see that the camera angle used is a wide shot, the reason a wide shot has been used is to show to the audience the full surroundings. We see the disturbing scene in daylight which contrasts against the normal typical conventions of a horror film; however this is done so the audience can clearly see the scene. As we can see the people who are hanging are placed in the middle of the clip, this is to show how important they are. The characters are all in very casual clothes and do not have any props on set.

         2. In this scene a medium long shot has been used to show exactly where the man is and gives the audience a clear understanding of this. The camera angle has zoomed in a little to show what the man is looking at; this will help the audience understand more about the scene.  The longshot has been used also, so the audience can fully understand this scene and see what’s going on. The character is dressed in casual clothing and the props are the box he is searching in and another box next to it. The lighting of this is very dim which links to the typical conventions of a horror film. This is just before something ‘scary’ happens, so the lighting is to prepare the audience. The scene is also set in the attic which typically the place where most horrific things take place in a horror film.

        3.  In the next scene we can see the camera angle used is medium close up, having the shot close up really shows us the characters face expression so we know how the character is feeling, in the scene. The close up completely eliminates all the other surroundings in this scene, so we only focus on the character. This scene is particular horrific, this scene involves a very dim lighting. This really emphasis the horror of this particular scene.  The boy has no clothing on and there are no props involved.

        4.  Another medium close up has been used and this shot is also partly a long shot. This has been used, so the audience isn’t distracted by any of the surrounding on the screen, there only drawn to the laptop screen and the characters expression.  The director probably wanted the laptop screen to be the main focus because, it’s important for the audience to see this. In this scene the lighting is very dark and the laptop screen is very bright which therefore makes the laptop screen stand out more. Also, the man is wearing very casual clothes and no props apart from the laptop and stationary are present in this scene.

         5. This scene is a medium close up the lighting is very dark as it is night time. The darkness of this film is a typical convention of a horror film. This scene is also an over the shoulder shot because the camera is placed behind the young girls shoulder, pointing directly to the possessed young girl and the drawing on the wall. No props have been used in this scene. The young girl in bed is just wearing pyjamas and the possessed girl is wearing a night gown.

         6. This shot is a medium long shot.  This shot is showing all the possessed children and the evil man. The children are all wearing very casual clothes and have very pale faces, to really emphasise the fact they’re possessed.  The medium shot really shows the surroundings of the film and also the characters very clearly. The lighting of this scene is very low lighting this is to show the typical conventions of a horror film.

        7. This scene is very bright lighting which is very different to the typical convention of the film. The camera angle use here is a medium shot, this is to fully show the characters so the audience can see what is all over the child and the man is carrying the girl, like she belongs to him. The man is wearing old classic blazers and the young girl is also wearing a classical night gown.

         8. This shot is a close up shot. The lighting is pitch black however, a small light is shining on the box to light the box up, and to see what’s in the box. The darkness is a typical convention of a horror film and therefore represents the horror film very well. Another convention of a horror film is the attic which is where most ‘scary’ things happen in a horror film, the box is placed in the attic to show the conventions of a horror film.

         9. This last shot is long shot. This is to clearly show the audience the surroundings of the scene. The lighting is typically dark and there are no lights brighten up the scene. The girls is still in a night dress and the man is still wearing a classical smart blazer.
