Taken nine frame- Bethany Thomas

1 Medium close up of the character shows his emotion which we can see looks desperate and concerned. From the medium close up we can also partially see some of the background which shows French flags which gives us a hint that the character might be in France. We can also see in the background a tall building which can say that he is in a busy city, not in the middle of nowhere.

2. This screenshot is a 3 shot of three men who we can assume are friends. The three shot is a medium close up so we can see in their hands they are holding crates of beers and other items. This tells us that these men are looking for a good night and want to just hang out as friends. We can also see a house behind the men which shows that they might be in a neighbourhood and have turned up at a friend’s house, the clothes that they are wearing tells us that the event is casual which also says that they are not going anywhere formal and are just looking for a night in.

3. Shot 3 is also a medium close up as we can only see from waist upwards, but because of the angle, we can see more of the characters surroundings, the angle is more wider which shows more of what is above the characters head and around him more than concentrating on what he is wearing and what his facial expression is like. We can see that the character is in a cafĂ© and we can also assume that he is alone because of the wide shot which doesn’t present anybody around him.

4. This is a medium long shot of the main character and his wife bidding farewell to their daughter as she goes on holiday with her friend to France. From this shot we can see that the parents are proud as they are videoing the moment and are smiling as they watch her go. From the length of the shot we can tell that the scene is based in an airport because of all of the brochures on the wall and the queues. We can also see behind the two main parents that there are more adults waving off their children so this tells me that it might be an event a lot of teenagers or young adults are attending.

5. This is an over the shoulder shot of the two friends getting their photo taken by a young French boy. The man looks really pleased to be taking their photo and looks as if he might be enjoying himself and the company of the girls, from looking at the shoulders of the two friends we can see that they are very close and are fond of each other because their heads are close and they have arms around each other. We can tell that the girls are still outside of the airport by looking at what is going on behind the man holding the camera, there is people streaming out of the building which we can assume is the airport, there is also a man in a suit which tells us that the area is built up and posh with lots of businessmen.

6. Is a close up of the main characters daughters face, we can see that she is on the phone looking at something past the camera so we can assume that what she is looking at is what she is discussing on the phone. Her face displays a sense of fear and worry so we can think that what she is looking at is something terrifying that she was not expecting. Because it is not an extreme close up we can see the characters surroundings slightly which is walls which shows that she is indoors, possibly in a bedroom.

7. This is a canted angle which can show that something isn’t right in the scene; even if we can’t see what is right in the scene the canted angle would instantly tell us that something is wrong. From the shot, we can see straight away that something is wrong without a canted angle so the angle just adds to the effect of what is going on in the picture. The shot is a long shot so we can see the character and where he is, in this case we can see the main character hanging of the side of the building and we can also see the huge drop below he’s feet that he’ll fall to if he lets go off the wall.

8. Fame 8 is a medium long shot and also a two shot of the main character talking to a man. We can see that they are on a public street that doesn’t look very well done up which we can see from the papers stuck onto the wall and the worn down shop. The two men look like they’re having a confrontation as the main character looks quite angry with character 2, I can tell this by his body language as his jaw is tense and his hands are shoved in his pockets suggesting that he’s refraining himself.

9. Shot 9 is a medium long shot of 3 people around a table; one is standing up holding a gun at point to the main character. The woman who is in the middle looks distressed and scared of the man holding the gun. We can see that the scene is placed in a family home and we can expect that this gun was unexpected because on the table is paced a buffet and it looks like the 3 characters were civilly eating together. The two men are wearing suits which suggests that the occasion was formal which makes the gun even more unexpected.

9 Frame Definitely Maybe- Bethany Thomas

1.       Text Box: 3Text Box: 6Text Box: 9Text Box: 8Text Box: 7Text Box: 5Text Box: 4Text Box: 2Text Box: 1

1.The first frame shows the production company and also has its own theme music to go with it so even without looking at the screen; we can hear that the movie is produced by a well-known company so we assume that this film will be well-done.
2. Frame two shows a close up of an envelope which is titled with the main characters name on, the envelope and the stamp tells us the formality and importance of the situation. This envelope is useful to the film as we find out a few things about the character within the first 39 seconds.

3. The third frame shows a medium shot of the character, with this we can see his reaction to the letter and we can also see his surroundings. The medium shot shows that Will is in a tall office building that looks quite expensive, this gives us the impression that Will has quite an important job and gets paid a fair amount because of the place that he works in. we can also see that Will has a shirt and tie on and looks formally dressed for work, this is another hint that his job has good pay and standards.

4. This is a close up of the character which shows us his reaction to the letter. The reaction shot could tell us that he is not overly thrilled to see the letter that is addressed to him and has he begins to read it he’s face drops further.

5. The next shot is a close up of what Will is reading and from this close up we can see that it is a divorce paper for will and what we can assume is his ex-wife.

6. This shot shows another production company called ‘a working title’

7. This shot is a medium close up of Will in his office, we can see from this shot a Quakers advertisement which tells us that his work has something to do with this big company. We can see also that he’s desk is cluttered; this could indicate that his life is also messed up a bit just like his desk. The desk can portray the characters emotions and show us how he may be feeling.

 8. Shot 8 is a shot of another character walking into Wills office. We can see behind her there is a big room with lots of desks so the fact that Will has his own big office shows that he has authority.

9. Frame 9 is a reaction shot of what the lady in screen 8 said, he looks like he is putting on a fake smile even though what she has said is good news. This is telling us that Will is having a really bad day and nothing can make him feel better.

Definitely, maybe analysis- Theo Benjamin

After 40 seconds we find out the main character, the location and his profession. Firstly we see him sitting at his desk with a suit on and skyscrapers in the background. Advertising boards in the back of his office shows us more about his job. His facial expressions show how he’s feeling about his current situation.

Close ups of the divorce papers shows what he is currently going through with his wife. All the workers around him are dressed formally and we can see he has his own office compared to all the other employees. Long shots are used by the cinematographer so we can see the size of the office. The location then goes from interior to exterior, we can see it’s around mid day due to the bright sunshine. He puts his headphones in and from now on we can see he’s more casual than when he was in the office. The yellow cabs in the background show that they’re in New York, this sets the location for the rest of the film. We also see iconic landmarks such as Grand Central Station.

Foley sound is used in the office for things such as the letter being dropped onto the desk and the man clicking his pen. Sound bridges are also used when we can hear the pen clicking from when the camera goes into the next room. There is then internal narration which are his thoughts, from this we find out that he’s not happy with his relationship and that they’re breaking up, the second part of the narration tells the audience that he doesn't like his job but that he does like Tuesdays and Fridays because he finishes early and gets to pick up his daughter from school. The sounds we get from outside are car noises coming from traffic and a happy, upbeat song to match his feelings.

Close up of the envelope for 3 seconds then cuts to the next shot. Next is a medium close up of the person in then office, this helps us see where he is. This shot cuts to the title which is on a blank screen. Another cut is done into a close up of the letter that was in the envelope, it tilts up to see his reaction to what was on it. We then get a close up/point of view shot of the letter, this cuts to another dark screen which has the director and producers name on it. This lasts 4 seconds so we can get a decent understanding of how he's feeling about the letter. Next is a 2 second medium shot of him in his office, we see his reactions by body language. A cut is used into a wide shot of him standing in his office from this shot we can also see out the window. Next is an exterior shot which pans left it first and then tracks back when he walks towards the camera, this shot lasts for 5 seconds before it cuts to an over the shoulder shot/big close up of him putting in his headphones. The cinematographer then arcs round the man to show him putting in  his other headphone, the arc lasts 4 seconds.

We then get to see a close up of the mp3 player which is only a second long. Then we get sound start which comes from the mp3, it is not diegetic or non diegetic this is because the song that's being played is heard by him through his head phones but also as well as heard by the audience.

9 frame analysis: Taxi Driver- Theo Benjamin

1) A crane shot is used to show what is in the room and how messy and full of blood it is. The music is made by drums and symbols, this starts of slowly and quietly and gets faster. This builds tension as well as making the viewer’s feel on edge and uncomfortable. This shot lasts for 9 seconds which is a long time, the cinematographer has done this so that the viewers can see what has gone on in the room and so they are able to grasp how bloody and brutal the attack was. Low key lighting is used as darkness is associated with bad & upsetting things.

2) The crane shot is still used in the next part of the film where it shows the dead body of one of the men that worked in the house. The music has now started to pick up intensity and other instruments are added such as a harp and a keyboard. The light becomes brighter so that the viewers can see that the blood has covered the victim. This shot is shorter and only lasts for 5 seconds, this is because we have already seen the room but the director wants to show how bloody the man is and try to put us in the mind of the police officers that have entered the room.

3) In the third shot we get a close up of blood that on the staircase wall. This is a classic horror film convention. Although we as an audience member know whos blood it is; it is an enigma to the police officers that have just entered the building. This close up lasts for 3 seconds and the camera then tilts down in a diagonal direction into the next shot.

4) Next shows a close up of the step with a blood stain on it. The music is still building during this shot, the use of drums and symbols increase in volume and the camera slowly pushes in towards the blood. This shot then fades out into the next shot of the gun.

5) This shot of the gun shows the weapon that he used to kill his second victim; the music is now at the same volume as before. This shot lasts 3 seconds as there is not much detail shown in it, the blood around the gun shows the mayhem it has caused. This makes the audience feel uncomfortable as the shot shows them how dangerous the weapon is and what the holder of it can do.

6) The shot then lasts here for 5 seconds, the blood is dripping down the wall and the fact that some it is dry shows that the murder happened a long time ago now. The cinematographer shows more blood on the wall in this shot and it makes the audience get the feeling that the location is a slaughter house or somewhere where people are killed, although we know that it is the complete opposite of that earlier in the film.

7) The first murder weapon is shown here for 4 seconds. This is in a close up and therefore shows the audience a detailed picture of what the gun looks like, there is blood around the gun which had come from the Travis (the character seen in shot one). The music starts to get quieter here as we come closer to the end of the house.

8) The first victim is shown in this frame and it reminds the audience of how much chaos Travis has caused in this house, the blood covering the body makes the audience and myself feel uncomfortable and sad that a life has been taken and because we're being shown graphic scenes. The camera then tilts down and shows outside the door.

9) A long shot is done by the cinematographer to show all the neighbors outside the house trying to see what’s happening inside, there’s a police officer keeping everyone away. The music then becomes louder and builds more tension so the audience feel on edge and like something else is going to happen.

Definitely maybe analysis Molly curtis

  1. 1.   in    the first scene this is the universal logo, which is the distributer of the film; this image stays on the screen for roughly 20 seconds. The image is spread widely across the screen so the audience can clearly see. No sound is used here only the sound of the music which goes with the universal logo. As we can see no character are present as the film hasn't begun yet.
  2. 2       In this scene we see the working title production company. No characters are shown here apart from the voice of one character talking.
  3. 3.       Here we see the ‘in association with studio canal’ this stays on the screen for approximately 5 seconds. With the dialogue of the workers voice, however he character is not present in the scene.
  4. 4.       Here we have the universal present’s title, this tells us the main company of the film and this stays on the screen for roughly 6 seconds. No dialogue is used in this scene just some calm music.
  5. 5.       Here we see the first part of the film. The camera angle used here is a close up image of the envelope to show the address of the envelope, this is how we first get introduced to the character.
  6. 6.       This scene has used an extreme close up, this allows us to be introduced to the character’s name and tell us he is getting a divorce, the character doesn’t talk about the divorce or directly tells us, we just see it on the sheet.
  7. 7.       In this scene the camera angle used is a wide shot, this allows us to see the character’s surrounding and therefore his location.  We then see his stationary so we are able to find out more about the character’s background and se he works in an office as we see the desk and stationary. The only dialect used is the women who say the character’s name, this is how we first know the character and find out his name.
  8. 8.       Here we see the character (Will) is wearing a formal suit which tells us he’s a smart individual. The character also tells us something about his-self and his daughter so we find out more about him. We also see the character’s surroundings as a medium shot has been used.
  9. 9.       A close up has been used to gain the audiences focus on the gadget he is holding. No dialect has been used here, we only hear the music playing.

Definitely, maybe 9 frame

1     1.   in this first shot we can see the logo for the production company of this film in which case is universal, when this is playing the universal theme tune is also playing. The first thought of this is that the production company is a high up company and is very well know so you would expect the film to be good and have high quality.
2     2.  In the second shot it shows a close up of a parcel slamming onto the table, the parcel shows the character’s name, location and shows a stamp at the top which shows that it is a business envelope and that it is air delivered. During this there is a loud bang noise which is Foley sound to emphasise the importance of the parcel and draws the audience’s attention to it.
3      3. In the third shot we can see the main character sitting at his desk looking as though he is in deep though concentrating on something, this also adds to the tension of the parcel as he is thinking about the parcel, this creates an enigma as to what is in the parcel. In this Foley sound is used for the sound of him clicking his pen, this shows he is bored/ impatiently waiting for something. In this shot he is in a working/ business environment so we can see that he is at work.
4      4. In this shot a close up is used to show the man’s expression of him opening his parcel. He looks concerned and worried. The digetic sound of a voiceover showing what he is thinking is used to show what the parcel is, before we see it so that the audience can think what it’s about, the voice over says ‘I don’t think anyone on their wedding day’ this gives us a bit of background about him so that the audience can get to know the character.
5    5.   The fifth shot used cuts to a point of view shot, this is used to show what the characters looking at and gives the audience a perspective of what the characters thinking/feeling. This shot shows the divorce papers which came from the parcels, the voiceover says ‘imagines that they will be the 45% of people that doesn’t live happily ever after’ which shows the audience why he was nervous to receive the parcel, this gives us some background about the character.
.    6.   This shot is a cut shot and a close up of one of his colleagues informing him about his job so she may be a messenger. In this she says ‘just heard we got the Quaker oats account’ this shows that he is successful in his job. The background is slightly blurred out so that the focus is on her.
7    7.   This shot then cuts to a close up of the man again showing him smiling sarcastically responding to what his colleague said this shows us that he doesn’t really care about what she’s saying. This may show that he doesn’t like his job. He is in the left of the shot which shows that he is an important character and brings the focus on him.
8     8.  In the eighth shot a medium close up is used to show his surroundings and to show his movement, in this we can see that he is putting the divorce papers away and packing up his stuff. A voice over is used to show him thinking ‘trying to figure out how to get kids to eat cap n crunch instead of froot loops’ this gives the audience some background on his job, the tone of his voiced sounds stressed and fed up this shows us that he probably doesn’t enjoy what he does.

9    9.   In this shot a wide shot is used, this shows his environment I a bigger perspective, it shows that he is in a sky scrapper building so he works in a business environment, his office also looks quite big so this shows that he may be quite high up and has a large role in his job. We can see him putting on his jacket so it shows that he is getting up to go somewhere. The voiceover used in this shot is ‘but Tuesdays and Fridays are my favourite days, I get out of work and pick up my daughter mya’ this shows that the day is either a Tuesday or a Friday as he is going to pick up his daughter, also it shows that his job doesn’t get in the way of him seeing his daughter. This shows that he has a family and that the divorce is not only affecting him but also his daughter.

The conjuring 9 frame

 1.  In this first screen shot of the conjuring we can see a point of view of someone looking out the window looking towards the family moving into the house. This shot gives the audience and brief idea about the characters as you can see they are a family moving into their new home, the music in the background is diegetic and is of the theme music for the film, this music adds tension and creates an enigma.  This is a wide shot. The car and the family is in the centre of the shot which shows they are the min focal point. The car and the clothes that they are wearing are very old fashioned and looks quite 80’s so you can tell its set in the older period. The image is quite casual and realistic. Ambient Foley sound of the car pulling up is used.
      2. The second shot I have chosen is a medium long shot, this shot shows the family moving into the house and bringing the boxes in, this shows what the characters movement is towards the house, this may make the audience feel nervous as the tension builds up towards the house, conversation between the characters is used to add realism to it.  The camera is behind the characters to show a point of view of one of the children characters going into the house.  The camera is focused on the woman in the middle of the focal point; this may show that she is one of the important characters in the film.
    3. This shot is a medium close up the woman is towards the left side of the shot which shows she is an important character. Low key lighting is used for a negative effect, as it shows she is more vulnerable as people are usually more vulnerable in the dark, the match is used to add danger as fire is seen as dangerous, the woman’s expression looks like she’s concentrating or trying to figure something out, in this case she is trying to look beyond the darkness and see what’s downstairs which creates an enigma. Foley sound of the match being lit is used.
     4. This shot is a medium close up it shows the woman looking quite angry and driving very firmly maybe trying to get away from something, it shows the children in the back of the car blurred out a little bit looking worried and scared. Low key lighting around is used and high key lighting is used on the woman to draw the audience’s attention to her to see what she is doing.
    5. This shot is a wide shot, this shot shows their environment in which is one of the children’s rooms. It shows the mother and the daughter in the focal centre point of the shot; this shows the relationship between the mother and the daughter and shows that they are close as they are playing together.  The blindfold on the mothers face represents that she is vulnerable as she cannot see. The colour red also represents danger which shows something bad might happen, this makes the audience feel on edge.
   6.  In this shot a medium close up is used of a scary doll. Low key lighting is used to create a negative effect to show that an evil presence is haunting the doll. Makeup is used on the doll to make it look timeworn and creepy, to make the audience feel afraid cracks and scars on the doll are used to show it had some sort of past which makes it look more dangerous and scary. The use of the colour red in the shot creates a negative effect as red is often used in horror conventions to show danger.
  7.  This show is a medium wide shot, it shows the married couple and the two paranormal therapists having a conversation about the mysterious events that have happened in the house, each characters looks quite concerned and concentrated so that are in a deep conversation that shows it is important. Ambient Foley sound it used when they push the chairs in and out to add naturalism and to show that they are sitting down as it is going to be a long serious conversation. The shot of the couple shows their facial expressions quite scared and worried for their family and shows the therapists looking as though they are concerned for them.
   8.  This shot shows a close up of the man’s face, the man is in the left side of the shot which brings all the attention to him, in the background to the right side there are decayed feet hanging which is obviously a woman hanging dead, the woman’s feet look old and decayed so it shows that it’s a flashback of an incident that has happened previously. The woman is wearing an old nightgown which shows that the event must have taken place in the 1900’s as no one really in the present times wears nightgowns. The man’s facial expression looks clueless as to what’s behind him, but he looks like he is in deep thought about something. The scenery is outside so it shows he is outside the house of the couple where the mysterious events had been happening.
9.  This shot is a medium close up of the therapist and the woman getting possessed, in this shot we can see some sort of exorcism going on, this shot shows the woman with a sheet over her bod which could show that she is dead and that the paranormal activity had taken over her body and her spirit is no longer there and the therapist is trying to revive her spirit. The therapist has a cross in her hand which shows religion and that she is asking for god’s help. The therapist looks very scared and concerned and looks like she is shouting and looking for help, this shows her being very vulnerable as she is in contact with the person being possessed. The woman is tied to her chair which shows that she is dangerous. Low key lighting is used in the background and high key lighting is used in the middle to draw the attention to them.

Location shots

This is the location that we will be using for our 2 minute clip, this is a house in lower halstow, we decided to use it as it is quite big and spooky so it would fit in well with our horror film. each shot is of what rooms and scenery that we will be using, in each room we will use low key lighting and fake blood to give a negative effect to add some horror conventions.
we will incorporate the pool into our clip as people are more vulnerable when they are around water.

Makeup

For the makeup, i am going to use face paint by 'Snazeroo' and also makeup cosmetics. I also have 3D wax to create a gunshot on Sarah Smiths head to show where the bullet hit and killed her, the 3D wax looks very realistic, making it look like there is a real hole in her skull. The face paint can be used to show blood dripping from the hole in her skull and any other places that were injured or stabbed by the intruders. The makeup will emphasis the fact that Sarah is dead by adding bags under her eyes using eye shadow and also using a contouring kit to make the characters face look really skinny and lifeless, i will also use either face paint or pale foundation to make Sarah look like the blood has been drained from her face.

key features of the film

About the key features of the film

We decided to go to Lower hailstow too film our main task; we decided to do this because the location is very old and creepy looking which links well to the theme of our film. Also next to the house there are some woods which give emphasis and make the house look even more daunting.

We decided to chose the theme of horror because, each person in our group all thoroughly enjoy watching horror films and enjoy the thrill, we know many people who also likes horror things and most student in our class like horrors too. This also links to the target audience being teenagers to young adults; we chose this as our target audience because, we know more about teenagers and young adults and would know what they enjoy and what they don’t enjoy.

The reason we decided to add a 999 call during the whole of the clip is because, t really adds a sense of thrill to the clip and a sense of dramatics. We also thought this is a new idea which is very different. This is also why we decided to choose flashbacks in the film.

Risk assessment

Risk Assessment list

We don’t need to think about that many risks in our film however there are a few being:

1. Fake blood, we need to assure we use this safely and be aware of where we are putting the blood and make sure it’s away from our eyes etc. we will also be very careful when handling the fake blood so we don’t spill any of it on the floor.

2. We also need to be careful of the shattered glass; we will place a plastic mat on the floor so no glass will go into the carpet. Also, we will handle the glass very carefully.

3. We will be using a knife as the knife is on the floor we won’t be holding it, however we will make sure we are very careful and keep aware when walking around.

Props and costumes

When filming for our main task we will need various different props and costumes. we will use props such as fake blood, synthetic cuts, knives and broken glass, when using these props we will carry out a risk assessment to ensure that all the props we used are used safely and sensibly.
The fake blood will be used to put on the carpet of the living room and other places in the house to add to the horror conventions, the blood will also be on the actor of the girl in the film during the flashbacks to show she has been killed.
synthetic cuts will also be used to add to the fact that shes been killed, there will be clues scattered around the room to add to the enigma as to how she has been killed, so broken glass will be on the floor along with a knife with fake blood on it.
A phone will be used for the girl laying on the floor with it in her hand with the 999 call up on the phone when she is laying on the floor to link in with the 999 call that will be played throughout.

The costumes used will be a casual outfit for the girl with rips in her clothes to give the idea that shes been attacked also we will back comb her hair so that it looks messy. Fake blood will be on her belly with a rip in her top and a synthetic cut showing.

For the set design during the present time the house will be bright but look quite empty and abandoned, we will do this by using old furniture and ornaments to make the house look quite mysterious and scary. Fake blood and glass will be scattered around the rooms in the house during the flashbacks with the furniture moved around and changed a little so that you can tell the difference between the present time and the flashback. low key lighting will be used in the flashbacks and high key lighting will be used in the present time to create a negative effect in the flashbacks.

Shot Schedule

The shot schedule will show the order in which we'll film each clip.

Shot number 1. Exterior-Outside the house: Wide shot of the house from far away. To do this we'll use a tripod then push in closer towards the front door.

Shot number 2. Interior-By the front door/corridor: The camera then moves slowly through the corridor ahead, this will be done with a moving tripod. The digetic pre-recorded phone call to the police will begin at this point.

Shot number 3. Interior-Living room: The camera will pan left from moving down the corridor to showing the inside of the living room. A tripod will be used here to give a smooth movement.

Shot number 4. Interior- Living room: We will start by showing a wide shot of the room and then do a hand held tour of the room.

Shot number 8. Interior- Living room/corridor: The corridor is our master shot, the camera always goes back here after touring the rooms. When the camera pans back to the corridor it will go back to using the original effect to show present day.

shot number 9. Interior- The camera will then pull out and pan to the right so the camera is facing back down the corridor. This will be done using a moving tripod, the phone call will start to get closer to the end.

Shot number 10. Interior- Corridor/kitchen: The camera slowly moves back up the corridor and pans left again to the kitchen. Here our 2 minute clip finishes.

Shot number 5. Interior- The flashbacks will begin the camera will push in to extreme close ups of important objects. The flashbacks are all done with a different filter to create a negative effect which shows the previous incident. The low key lighting will show the difference between past and present.

Shot number 6. interior- a close up of a dead girl laying on the floor with blood on her will be used in the flashback.

Shot number 7. interior- the camera will then pan left towards the girls hand to show the phone and the 999 call, at this point the call would be cut off.
